Thinking About Fat Freezing?
7 Questions You Should Ask Any Fat Freezing Clinic Before They Treat You
Fat freezing can look deceptively simple.
An applicator goes on. The fat is cooled. Over the following weeks, your body gradually clears the affected fat cells.
So when you see ads offering fat freezing for $99, $149 or $199, it's easy to think you're comparing the same treatment at different prices.
But are you?
After more than nine years specialising in fat freezing and conducting more than 20,000 weight-loss consultations, these are the seven questions we think you should ask any clinic - including us - before they treat you.
FAT FREEZING IS PERMANENT! IT’S YOUR BODY AND IT’S FOREVER
So we want to get it right (and you want us to too)
1. What machine are you actually using?
"Fat freezing" describes a technology. It doesn't tell you which device is being used.
Ask for the manufacturer and exact model and the ARTG number. Under the health act any machine used on your body (particularly ones that give permanent changes) are required to be listed with the TGA and have an ARTG number.
At My Temple, we use CLATUU and the CLATUU Alpha, manufactured by CLASSYS. These are all included on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods as Class IIb medical device (ARTG 489846) and ARTG 243432 and ARTG 259035.
You have every right to know exactly what machine is being used on your body.
2. Is the machine included on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods?
You'll sometimes see clinics promoting equipment as "FDA approved" or "FDA cleared."
But the FDA is the US regulator.
In Australia, medical devices are regulated by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) and, where required, are included on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG).
Ask the clinic:
"What is the ARTG number for your machine?"
You can even check it yourself.
3. How much fat freezing experience do you actually have?
There's a difference between a clinic that offers fat freezing and one that specialises in it.
Ask how long they've been performing treatments, how frequently they perform them and who will actually be treating you.
The machine matters. So does the person using it.
A reduced temperature or suction and handle size and shape can vary a lot and variations of these will provide different outcomes.
Quite often a reduced suction or temperature will be used so that we align the tissue with the adjacent tissue, so that no dents or lumps are created. There is no rhyme or reason with this, just years of experience and over 10,000 previous treatments.
We will use these available variances to even out your assymetry as best we can and to provide the desired outcomes.
Quality of skin, thickness of subcutaneous tissue, and size of area all play a part, and you can’t gain this through a training manual.
Only through experience.
My Temple has specialised in fat freezing since 2017, and because everyone responds differently to treatment, this experience matters.
4. How do you know I'm actually suitable?
Not every tummy is a fat-freezing tummy.
What you're seeing could be subcutaneous fat, visceral fat, loose skin, muscle laxity — or a combination.
And sometimes there simply isn't enough suitable fat to treat.
A consultation shouldn't begin with:
"How many areas would you like?"
It should begin with:
"What are you trying to change, and is fat freezing actually appropriate for you?"
Sometimes at My Temple, we say no to treatment.
We would rather lose the sale than take your money for a treatment we don't believe is right for you.
Treating someone who is not suitable for treatment could potentially increase risk of PAH (paradoxical adipose hyperplasia - a serious but very rare condition where the fat cells get bigger in the treated area). We assess your body properly and expecitng a 5 minute phone call to answer your questions and create an appropriate treatment plan is unfair on us (as specialists in this field) and unfair on you. There is no point spending $500 if you need to spend $2000.
5. Who decides where the applicators go?
Your body isn't a flat sheet of fat conveniently divided into $99 areas.
The shape, depth and distribution of fat varies considerably from person to person.
Applicator selection and placement should form part of an individual treatment plan.
Ask:
Why are you treating there? Why that applicator? How many treatments do I actually need?
Because you're not really buying an applicator.
You're paying for an outcome.
6. What are the risks and potential side effects?
Fat freezing is non-surgical.
But non-surgical doesn't mean risk-free.
A reputable clinic should discuss common side effects and rare complications before you agree to treatment.
One rare but important complication is Paradoxical Adipose Hyperplasia (PAH), where the treated fatty tissue enlarges rather than reduces.
It's very uncommon — but it's real, and you deserve to know about it.
Ask what complications are possible, how the clinic manages them, what evidence does their machine has regarding this occurrence, and what happens if something goes wrong.
Informed consent matters. It's your body.
So, Should You Choose Fat Freezing Based on Price?
There's nothing wrong with comparing prices.
But make sure you're actually comparing the same thing.
The machine.
Its Australian regulatory status.
The experience of the provider.
Your assessment.
Your treatment plan.
The discussion of risks.
Your follow-up.
And whether you're actually suitable for treatment in the first place.
If the only difference you're comparing is price, you probably don't have enough information yet to compare the treatments.
At My Temple, we don't start by asking:
"How many areas would you like?"
We start by asking:
"What are you trying to achieve?"
Then we'll tell you what we recommend — even when our recommendation is not to treat you.

7. What result should I realistically expect?
This may be the most important conversation of all.
Fat freezing is body contouring — not weight-loss surgery — and results vary. But what is most important is that fat freezing in permanent. This is not something to muck around with. Its your body and your results are forever.
Your clinic should be able to explain:
What is this treatment likely to change?
And equally importantly:
What isn't it going to change?
They should also explain when you'll be reviewed, how results will be assessed and what follow-up is provided.
A good consultation isn't about selling you as many treatments as possible.
It's about recommending enough treatment to achieve a visible outcome — and being prepared to tell you when that outcome isn't realistic.
