The 20 Biggest Mistakes People Make After Fat Freezing (And How to Avoid Them) - Part 1
If you're considering fat freezing—or you've recently had treatment—you probably want to know one thing:
"How do I get the best possible results?"
The good news is that fat freezing (cryolipolysis) is one of the most researched non-surgical body contouring treatments available. The treatment works by permanently damaging targeted fat cells, which are then naturally eliminated by your body over the following weeks.
However, while the treatment does the work, your expectations, treatment plan and the choices you make afterwards all influence how happy you'll be with your outcome.
After performing thousands of consultations and treatments, we've seen the same mistakes made time and time again. Fortunately, they're all avoidable.
Here are the 20 biggest mistakes people make after fat freezing and what you should do instead.
1. Expecting Immediate Results
Perhaps the biggest misconception about fat freezing is expecting to see dramatic changes within a few days.
Your body needs time to recognise, break down and naturally eliminate the damaged fat cells through the lymphatic system. This biological process cannot be rushed.
Most clients begin noticing subtle changes from around two to four weeks, but the full clinical results generally occur over approximately 12 weeks.
Because the reduction happens gradually every single day, many clients don't actually notice the changes until we compare their before-and-after photographs and measurements.
Be patient. Your body is working even when you can't see it.
2. Expecting Global Weight Loss
Fat freezing is not a weight-loss treatment.
It is a body contouring treatment designed to permanently reduce fat cells in specific areas of the body.
Many people expect the scales to change dramatically after treatment. In reality, the amount of fat removed from one treatment area is relatively small compared with your total body weight.
Instead of focusing on the scales, pay attention to:
Clothing fitting better
Smaller waist measurements
Improved body shape
Better body proportions
Increased confidence
Think of fat freezing as changing your shape, not necessarily your weight.
3. Thinking Fat Freezing Replaces Healthy Habits
Fat freezing permanently removes treated fat cells.
It does not stop the remaining fat cells throughout your body from storing energy.
Maintaining a balanced diet and regular exercise helps preserve your new body shape for years to come.
The great news is that many clients find seeing improvements motivates them to continue making healthier choices.
4. Overeating After Treatment
Although the fat cells destroyed during treatment are permanently eliminated from the body, the remaining fat cells can still increase in size if you consistently consume more energy than your body uses.
This doesn't mean the treatment failed.
It simply means the remaining fat cells have expanded, making the improvement less noticeable.
5. Chasing the Number on the Scales
This is one of the most common reasons people become disappointed.
The scales don't measure body shape.
While theoretically weight loss occurs after fat freezing, we never measure success based on the scale because your weight on the scales fluctuates vastly from morning to night, day to day and there are so many variables to the number on the scales. A meal with a high number of carbohydrates the day before will have 4 grams of water attached to every gram of carbohydrate while it is in your digestive system while a protein rich and carb free meal will not. Therefore your scales can easily be up a kilo by the end of the day. Hormones, sleep and other normal activities (increased muscle mass) impact the scales, so it is important to reply on measurements and photographs rather than the scales.
Your mirror, measurements and clothing are often far better indicators than your bathroom scales.
6. Not Drinking Enough Water
Your body naturally clears the damaged fat cells through normal physiological processes.
While drinking extra water won't increase your results, it will help to speed up the fat loss, so staying well hydrated supports your body's normal recovery and lymphatic function.
7. Ignoring Your Aftercare Instructions
Your clinician provides aftercare instructions for a reason.
Recommendations may include avoiding anti-inflammatory medications (where medically appropriate), following activity guidelines and attending your follow-up appointment.
Following your clinician's advice gives your body the best opportunity to respond as expected.
8. Having Unrealistic Expectations
Fat freezing can create significant improvements in body contour.
However, it won't completely transform your body in a single session or make you look like somebody else.
Every person's anatomy, fat distribution, muscle structure and skin quality are different.
That's why every treatment plan should be personalised.
9. Thinking One Treatment Will Solve Everything
Some clients achieve their goals with one treatment.
Others require several sessions.
The number of treatments depends on:
The thickness of the fat layer
Your desired outcome
Your body shape
The area being treated
The larger your goal, the more comprehensive your treatment plan may need to be.
10. Getting Additional Treatments Too Soon
Your body continues changing for weeks after treatment.
Treating the same area too early may result in unnecessary treatments before you've had a chance to assess your final result.
Your clinician will recommend appropriate review times based on your individual treatment plan.
You've made it through the first 10 mistakes, but there are still 10 more that could make a big difference to your results. Continue to Part 2 to learn the remaining mistakes (including the biggest one of all) and how to avoid them.
